After he had completed this letter Will Grafton sat for a while, thinking about Carrie. It seemed to him that his life had been as dry as dust until Caroline Paxton, as she then was, came into it. He could picture her now, a bright, lively girl of twenty and he a serious and rather dull man of forty. It had been a strange chance that threw them together, but they had enjoyed a blessed twelve years and at least he had the children to remember her by. The grief of her death was still there, but he had put it aside until a due season in which he could indulge it.

The important thing for now was to run those villains to earth and take them back to face justice. It was a pity that that foolish fellow who worked for the railroad had set himself in opposition to Grafton’s interests. The love of money was a terrible thing and Grafton half wished he had brought with him a supply of the printed tracts which he kept on the counter of his shop for anybody as wanted one.

At this thought, he half smiled. He had an idea that McKinley and that strange-looking relative of his were not the kind to be swayed by a passage from scripture.

Grafton decided to take the letter to the mail. He sealed it in an envelope, addressed it and then went out into the streets. As he walked along he wondered if he ought to acquire a horse and make his way south on that. It took only a few seconds to persuade himself of the folly of such a course of action. He knew almost nothing at all about the care of horses and even if he could stay on the beast, he had an idea it would make for slow travelling indeed. No, for the time being he would, perforce, remain here in Parsons and hope that some new development would chance which would bring him closer to the men he sought.

In fact, before the week was out, he and the Vallence gang would be set directly on a collision course, but of that Will Grafton had not the slightest premonition.
